Building Resilience in People with Disabilities in the Post Covid Environment

70% of the total SAIs are in rural parts of the country and less than 2% of persons with disabilities have access to basic rehabilitation services.

An uphill journey for specially abled individuals

In India, according to census 2011, there are 2.68 Crore SAIs (2.21% of the country’s population) out of which 55% are literates and 36 % of SAIs are working in the country. 70% of the total SAIs are in rural parts of the country and less than 2% of persons with disabilities have access to basic rehabilitation services. This is due to lack of professionals in the rural areas and a majority of services are located in the urban areas. Recognizing disability in rural India and working to change communal attitudes on acceptance and inclusion of this population remains an immense challenge.
