A New Opportunity for India’s Social Sector
About the Event:
The Social Stock Exchange (SSE) is a novel initiative that is expected to drive greater transparency, efficiency and professionalism in the social sector. It is in this context Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), one of the leading development sector organizations’ of the country organised a half-day seminar on Social Stock Exchange.
The seminar aimed to enable all key partners and stakeholders to get a better grasp of the “what”, “how” and “why” of this landmark initiative and the impact it will have on the development sector.
Who all attended
The Seminar by SVYM on #SocialStockExchange (SSE) – A New Opportunity for India’s Social Sector saw participation from 80+ partners representing 57 organisations comprising the Govt., Corporate-CSR, Foundations and CSO sector. The seminar was held in Bengaluru.
It was energising to see the very first NGO that registered with SSE, representatives from the corporate and intermediaries exchange viewpoints – broadening the contextual horizon over which the SSE is set to dawn, taken forward through a stakeholder’s approach – and not a shareholder’s approach.
After an inaugural ceremony, the CEO of SVYM Smt Savitha S opened the dialogue formally for the participating members. Ananya Samajdar, Deputy Director – Research, GRAAM provided a global perspective about the Social Stock Exchange, what the many countries that have tried as their SSE model. She pointed out the model failed in countries where an inclusive market with diverse investors and investees were absent.
Key speaker Dr R Balasubramaniam and Sri Hemant Gupta addressed the members, sharing the journey of the SSE so far and explaining the framework.
Apart from the participants taking notes, voicing their opinions/concerns and getting to know the nuts and bolts – of the SSE Machinery – what was unique was the unfolding of the organic process encapsulating the vision, the intent, the real challenges that the SSE Advisory Committee has been grappling with on a day to day basis – now shared with the participating members. The ‘for’ and ‘against’ of how and why some of the crucial decisions that were taken – at times as eternal activists, at times as compassionate capitalists.
All the push & pull to strike a balance that’s just about right in being demanding to the investees, appealing to the investors & agreeable to the intermediaries – all of this upon a lingering hindsight of the global SSE scene that couldn’t really take off.
The participating members were exposed to the humane side of the SSE drafting – a contrast to the theoretical version raising numerous speculations. The seminar intended to expand the contextual relevance of the SSE through dialogue.
The key speakers urged the participants to take a broader viewpoint, to see beyond the individual need to go to the SSE platform to raise funds, but to come together using the platform to set up instruments of change. They also invited the members to participate in further enriching & evolving the SSE by continuing to reach out to them with their inputs through the SVYM’s SSE platform.
Our Communication team is preparing a video of the event along with FAQ resources for those who could not attend and will soon upload it on the SVYM website Social Stock Exchange Page and Youtube Channel for public perusal.
